Expected Learning Outcomes

The course introduces the principles of Building Rehabilitation Technologies—a discipline aimed at understanding the transformation processes of the built environment—and provides methods and tools to define, evaluate, and control choices related to building interventions. The required learning outcomes are:

1. Knowledge and understanding (Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione)
  • Outline the core theoretical principles and themes of building and urban rehabilitation, recognizing the evolution and contemporary state of the art in the field.
  • Identify and define the technological and building systems that characterize the identity of a specific place.
  • Comprehend and differentiate key discipline-specific concepts, including Rehabilitation, Redevelopment, Reuse, Maintenance, Urban Regeneration, and Self-made recovery.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding (Capacità di applicare conoscenza e comprensione)
  • Analyze existing architectural heritage by effectively employing diagnostic and analytical investigative tools.
  • Manage and execute the meta-design phase of a project, translating user needs and social components into performance requirements.
  • Guide and develop design strategies dedicated to the preservation, conservation, and transformation of the built environment.
3. Making judgments (Autonomia di giudizio)
  • Evaluate and cross-reference social requirements (user needs) with the actual structural and technological performance of existing buildings.
  • Assess the feasibility and sustainability of different design scenarios to select the most appropriate intervention strategy.
  • Critically reflect on the architectural, historical, and social values of the built environment prior to any design transformation.
4. Communication skills (Abilità comunicative)
  • Communicate complex design choices and meta-design assessments with clarity, both in oral and graphic forms.
  • Employ precise technical language and codified terminology appropriate for the fields of architectural restoration and urban regeneration.
  • Demonstrate advanced graphic proficiency in conveying technical elements and design solutions during project presentations.
5. Learning skills (Capacità di apprendimento)
  • Develop autonomous methodological approaches to continuously survey, analyze, and update knowledge regarding the existing built heritage.
  • Acquire self-directed learning tools to keep pace with the evolution of technical regulations, sustainability standards, and state-of-the-art practices in building rehabilitation.

Course Structure

The course is based on a series of lectures covering the themes of building and urban recovery, also linked to the history of restoration and rehabilitation. Alongside these core lectures, materials will be provided for a practical assignment (esercitazione) spanning the entire duration of the course. This assignment will focus on a site with a high need for urban redevelopment and recovery objectives, and it will be evaluated as part of the final exam. Specialized technological insights will be provided in relation to the chosen case study. Final examinations will take place at the end of the course, in accordance with the published schedule.
Should the course be taught in a blended or remote/distance learning mode, necessary variations to what was previously stated may be introduced in order to comply with the planned program outlined in the Syllabus.

Attendance of Lessons

The course is organized into an alternating schedule of theoretical lectures and practical exercises.
The theoretical lectures will cover the aforementioned topics and will build the knowledge base required to pass the exam.
The year-long project will focus on the technological and environmental study of a building located in an urban center characterized by strong historical/architectural identity and containing a number of buildings in need of redevelopment. Two practical exercises will be carried out on this topic: the first concerning the understanding of the structural and technological system and its representation through technological sections; the second concerning the understanding of the role of the social component and the research for design solutions. The project materials will be reviewed throughout the year and presented at the exam. A recovery project will be developed for this case study, which will be presented, discussed, and evaluated during the final examination.

Detailed Course Content

The Building recovery, a practice that stems from greater consideration for the built heritage, from a general welfare and needs for technological innovation, is a unique process which involves a transformation project, a modification seeks recovery of memory. There is therefore only one field within which the transformation processes have to be activated, that of conservation that involves the full range of actions, from the total storage innovation more thrust and what unifies them is the methodological choice: the theme of 'urban and historical identity. To achieve this end is a process of knowledge necessary to articulate, diagnostic process in all respects, which identifies disease, failure, degradation, causes and agents.

The technology, in this context, the active intervention process through the acquisition of information and manages the flow through the process of knowledge. Technique and technology are the tools for a conscious design of the restoration project; it is governed through the retention rate - change according to the needs of users and is expressed through a series of indications and design scenarios, derived from the cognitive process.

The need to limit the changes requires the restoration project to report the actions to parameters that can not only identify the 'uniqueness' of an underlying asset, but also to ensure the ability to integrate new scenarios to the existing, by controlling the processing / preservation process. In this case, the culture of recovery is expressed by saying that, if on one hand it is necessary to verify the context and the object of the intervention, on the other, especially in Italy, the recovery processes are governed by the possibility of translation of the outcomes cultural, social and economic,

 "Inextricably linked to knowledge and the beliefs, knowledge and to hear the whole and very large architectural territory. In fact it, in all its denotations scientific, technical, cultural, architectural and engineering, social, historical, economic, productive feeding with its history and composite and polytechnic education every action of conservation and transformation of our environment and shows it every meaning and representation "[i].

Learning Assessment

Learning Assessment Procedures

The course consists of theoretical lectures, seminars, and practical exercises. In-course assessments will be scheduled throughout the semester to monitor learning progress through practical drafting exercises and/or open-ended questionnaires.
The final examination consists of an oral exam designed to assess the knowledge acquired on the topics covered during the lectures. This will be supplemented by a requirement to produce impromptu graphic drawings of constructive details and joints. The final evaluation will take into account both the performance in the oral interview and the quality and completeness of the graphic drawings produced during the course.
These elements will be assessed according to the following evaluation criteria:
  • Knowledge of the contents;
  • Clarity of presentation;
  • Completeness of the discussion;
  • Mastery of the codified technical language;
  • Graphic proficiency.
Should health or logistical conditions require it, the teaching activities and the related learning assessments may be conducted online, in a blended format, or via distance learning. In such cases, the necessary variations to what was previously stated will be introduced to ensure compliance with the program and the educational goals outlined in the Syllabus.
To guarantee equal opportunities and in compliance with current legislation, interested students may request a personal interview with the professor to arrange any compensatory and/or dispensatory measures based on the educational objectives and specific individual needs. Students may also contact the CInAP (Center for Active and Participatory Integration — Services for Disabilities and/or Specific Learning Disabilities/DSA) liaison professor of their respective Department by consulting the contact list on the Official CInAP Unict Website.

Examples of frequently asked questions and / or exercises

The questions for the oral exam will cover the topics addressed during the course. Examples:
  • How has the concept of "building recovery" (recupero edilizio) evolved toward the definitions of "reuse" and "redevelopment/qualification"?
  • How does intervening on existing buildings integrate into the era of ecological transition?
  • Describe a case study (Italian or European) where a reuse project regenerated a building organism, altering its original intended use through the integration of new technical components.
  • How does the information flow of knowledge (from material survey to the diagnostics of the technological system) influence and constrain the choices of the transformation project?
  • How are the values of the existing built environment integrated into the recovery project?
