The course is based on two main educational objectives: Architecture as a representation and as a logical construction of space. The concepts will be developed alongside the lectures with design exercises; a final design essay will be the moment of synthesis and verification of the proposed teaching. The project is as a matter of facts the place of confluence of all the different disciplines - historical-critical, aesthetic, physical-mathematical, technological - offered by the school of architecture. The basic knowledge of the architectural discipline - an initial as well as essential moment in student's cultural and design training - constitutes the primary objective of the course. It is organized in two phases: the first consists of the study of known architectural works on the theme of the single-family house, the second consists of composition and design exercises.
According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:
DdD 1_Knowledge and understanding of the fundamental theoretical and methodological elements of architectural design at the scale of domestic space. DdD 2_Ability to apply acquired knowledge to the spatial, distributive, and functional composition of a single-family residence. DdD 3_Ability to independently implement design choices. DdD 4_Ability to communicate design choices clearly and convincingly. DdD 5_Acquire a level of design maturity that allows for tackling subsequent project scales.
The course includes laboratory activities and lectures.
The skills acquired in secondary school and the eventual passing of the Additional Educational Obligations (OFA) attributed to the student based on the verification of initial knowledge (entry test) are sufficient, to be completed obligatorily within the first year of the course through the recovery methods established by the Course of study.
Attendance of the course is mandatory
The course will be introduced by some communications on representation systems and on the technical, construction and graphic standards of the residence project. The proposed exercises are of two different orders: study exercises of a known architectural work, a single-family house, and composition exercises. The first exercise that the students will face will be the analysis of single-family houses of some masters of contemporary architecture. The subsequent exercises will still concern the study of the single-family residence, focusing on the theme of the relationship between morphology, typology and construction. Students will be assigned a project area in an urban context: on the basis of the examples provided during the course, students will develop their own projects, which will vary depending on the typological and structural choice. The following will therefore be addressed: the house on a Gothic lot and the patio house developed in the stereotomic and tectonic construction variant. The critical reading of the works studied and the elaboration of the design exercises will be guided by a series of thematic lessons on the fundamental concepts of architecture and other monographs on the masters of the Modern Movement and contemporary architects.

| 1 | Introductory lessons on systems of representation of the single-family house and on construction systems. Redrawing of a single-family house by a 20th century architect. | Introduction to the terraced and courtyard residential typology and design exercises on the topic. |
The exam will be individual and will consist of an interview on the topics of the course and a discussion on the analysis and project documents. For each exercise the following documents are required: pencil drawings on cardboard in A2 vertical format with plans, elevations, sections, monometric axonometrics (and/or axonometric cross-section), model.
The questions of the oral test will focus on the topics covered during the course
