Expected Learning Outcomes

The Laboratory of Representation and Descriptive Geometry aims to involve each student in understanding the basic mechanisms of the subject, to the point of rendering the practice of the imagination of three-dimensional objects represented on a two-dimensional support natural. The applications that will be proposed, even with the targeted use of three-dimensional modeling software, have in fact the objective, in constituting a basic theoretical support, to develop in the students a clear mental vision of the three-dimensional space.

The constant, conscious and assiduous exercise is the only means to reach this goal and for this reason a condition of total immersion in the graphic practice is expected.

The course aims to lead students to:

    - be able to apply their knowledge, comprehension skills and ability to solve problems in new or unfamiliar issues, inserted in broader (or interdisciplinary) contexts connected to their field of study;
    - acquire the ability to integrate knowledge and manage complexity, as well as to make judgments based on limited or incomplete information, including reflection on social and ethical responsibilities related to the application of their knowledge and judgments;
    - know how to communicate their conclusions, as well as the underlying knowledge and rationale, clearly and unambiguously, to specialist and non-specialist interlocutors;
    - develop learning skills that allow them to continue to study mostly in a self-directed or autonomous way.

Course Structure

Teaching in Laboratory of Representation and Descriptive Geometry will take place mainly in the classroom. Each student must be provided with the tools for geometric drawing. Frontal lessons and drawing exercises, researches and applications will alternate in a dense and continuous manner. During the exercises there will be corrections and didactic talks in order to verify the progress of individual learning and support personal motivations. There are some outdoor drawing exercises both freehand and geometric, on large supports. Some integrative activities will allow a basic approach to CAD drawing softwares.

Required Prerequisites

The skills acquired in secondary school are sufficient, the competence in geometric design acquired in the drawing courses of the compulsory school and the possible passing of the Additional Educational Obligations (OFA) attributed to the student based on the verification of initial knowledge ( entrance test), which must be completed within the first year of the course through the recovery methods established by the Degree Program.

Any other initial deficiency can in any case be compensated with constant and conscious application in the first weeks of study and with the support of the teacher.

Attendance of Lessons

Regular attendance of laboratory lessons is essential.

Pursuant to art. 24 of the University Didactic Regulations and point 3.1 of the Study Program Didactic Regulations, attendance is compulsory for courses called "Laboratory". Students can request total or partial exemption from the attendance obligation for serious and / or justified reasons. The dispensation is approved by the Degree Program Board and must simultaneously provide for the possibility of participating in the sessions of the related exams. Attendance of supplementary activities is also highly recommended.

Detailed Course Content

Drawing represents the elective instrument of architecture and has always been the means through which design thinking unfolds.

With the certainty that the practice of architecture must be based in the first place on a clear knowledge of the technical and conceptual tools of traditional drawing, for training purposes, for the first months the use of computer-assisted drawing is excluded, which instead will only concern the central and final part of the course. In any case, the use of manual techniques and elementary materials will be essential: paper, cardboard, pencils, colored pastels, watercolors, compasses, erasers, rulers and squares. The acquisition of a basic technique and refined manual skills will allow you to appreciate and use the tools offered by modern technology in the best possible way, with full awareness.

The topics covered are the following:

Introduction to drawing: technical and theoretical tools of drawing; the functions of the drawing; general information on methods of representation.

Elementary constructions and their applications: elementary geometric constructions; harmonic relationships; geometric patterns and patterns; fundamentals of graphic analysis.

Introduction to architectural drawing: reduction stairs; main graphic conventions; plans, elevations, sections; representation of an architectural project in scale 1:50 and in scale 1: 100.

Outline of projective geometry: projection and section; projectivity, perspective, homology.

Monge projections: reference model; representation of geometric entities, flat and solid figures; sections with projecting planes inclined with respect to the reference planes, overturning, true shape and size.

Perspective: vertical and horizontal framework perspective: reference model and representation of geometric entities, flat and solid figures; measuring points.

Axonometry: reference model and representation of geometric entities, flat and solid figures; oblique and orthogonal projections; trace triangle; normalized triples.

Shadow theory: shadows in Monge's projections, axonometry, perspective.
