Expected Learning Outcomes

As a sequel to the teaching of Technological Design and Control for Construction Site Safety I, the course aims to provide methods and tools to manage building and maintenance of architectural works. The project quality is indispensable for ensuring building quality, efficiency in construction processes and security - for workers and users - in the building and management phases.

The analysis of the governing law on safety in workplaces, particularly on temporary and mobile sites, highlights relationships between the design phase and the subsequent phases of building and management. The course shows the results of co-operation between designers and Coordinator for Safety and Health Matters at the Project Preparation Stage, both in terms of risk-reduction, and security promotion throughout the life-cycle of the building.

The analysis of issues concerning drawings and documents included in the project, in the Security and Coordination Plan, in the Safety Operational Plans, and in the Building File allows to define their contents and to highlight their relationships. The need to manage trans-disciplinary contributions in the detailed design requires a systemic approach to the building project. Such approach is transferred to the construction site, in order to outline the constraint system and the risk factors, referred to design solutions, construction site planning and business coordination.

Course Structure

The course includes lectures, seminars and practical exercises. Learning process check tests (optional) will be scheduled (open-ended questions and drawings).

Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus.

The final examination consists of a discussion on the topics covered in the lectures and the practical exercises, in order to test the achieved knowledge.

Learning assessment may also be carried out on line, should the conditions require it.

Required Prerequisites

Admission to the 4th year or later.

It is recommended to attend the course after successfully passing the exam of Construction Technology and Systems for Architecture. The course can also be undertaken before that of Technological Design and Control for Construction Site Safety I.

The course is part of a set of three courses enabling the achievement of the certificate required for the professional activity of Safety Co-ordinator in the Design Phase and Safety Co-ordinator in the Execution Phase, in accordance with Art. 98 c. 1 and 2 and Annex XIV of Legislative Decree 81/08 and subsequent amendments and integrations.

Attendance of Lessons

Not mandatory.

In order to obtain the certificate of Safety Coordinator for the Design (CSP) and Execution (CSE) of works, the following is required:
  • attendance of at least 90% of the courses in Technological Design and Control for Construction Site Safety I (48 hours) and II (48 hours), as well as the module of exercises (24 hours)
  • a successful completion of the final learning examination of the Technological Design and Control for Construction Site Safety I and II courses.
Attendance at the lectures and exercises must be guaranteed at least to the extent of 90% (minimum 43 hours for each course and 22 hours of exercises).

Technical framework (32 hours)

  • The risks related to the use of work machines and equipment with a focus on lifting and transport equipment
  • The chemical risks on site
  • The physical risks: noise, vibrations, microclimate, lighting
  • The biological risks
  • The risks of manual handling of loads
  • Fire and explosion risks
  • Risks in the assembly and disassembly of prefabricated elements
  • Personal protective equipment and safety signs

Methodological/organisational framework (16 hours)

  • The minimum contents of the Safety and Coordination Plan, the Substitute Safety Plan and the Operational Safety Plan
  • The methodological criteria for: a) the elaboration of the safety and coordination plan and its integration with the operational safety plans and the dossier; b) the elaboration of the operational safety plan; c) the elaboration of the dossier; d) the elaboration of the Pi.M.U.S. (Plan for the Assembly, Use, Dismantling of Scaffolding; e) the estimation of safety costs
  • Communication theories and techniques, oriented towards problem solving and cooperation; group management and leadership theories
  • Relations with clients, planners, construction management, workers' safety representatives

    Learning Assessment

    The course includes a final examination consisting of an interview, aimed at verifying

    1. the knowledge of the topics covered in the lectures
    2. the ability to present the topics of discussion and the proficiency in technical language;
    3. the ability to independently and critically relate the knowledge acquired.
    The learning assessment may also be carried out online, should the conditions so require.
